Week 8 - Instructional Design
Section outline
-
𧩠If you are designing a full course or training program â Use ADDIE.
Why:
-
ADDIE gives a big-picture framework for developing an entire instructional plan.
-
It guides you from planning to evaluation (like a project cycle).
-
Best for curriculum design, module creation, or online course development.
Example: Creating a full online module or training course for students or staff.
đ§ If you are planning or delivering a single lesson â Use GagnĂ©âs Nine Events.
Why:
-
Gagné focuses on what happens inside one lesson or learning session.
-
It helps you structure how to teach step-by-step â from attention to application.
-
Best for classroom or e-learning delivery (lesson-level planning).
Example: Designing one interactive topic like âRadiation Safetyâ or âIntroduction to Dental Materials.â
â In Short:
-
ADDIE = Course Design Framework (macro level)
-
Gagné = Lesson Delivery Framework (micro level)
đĄ Best practice:
Use ADDIE to design the overall program,
and use GagnĂ©âs Nine Events to structure each lesson inside that program.-
Robert Gagné proposed nine steps that guide effective teaching and learning. Each step helps move learners from gaining interest to applying knowledge in real-life situations.
-
Gain Attention â Begin the lesson with something that attracts learnersâ interest, such as a question, short video, or real-life example.
-
Inform Learners of Objectives â Clearly tell students what they will learn and what outcomes are expected.
-
Stimulate Recall of Prior Knowledge â Help students connect new information to what they already know.
-
Present the Content â Deliver new material in an organized and engaging way using visuals, demonstrations, or examples.
-
Provide Learning Guidance â Offer explanations, tips, and examples to support understanding.
-
Elicit Performance (Practice) â Allow learners to apply what they have learned through activities or exercises.
-
Provide Feedback â Give immediate and constructive comments to correct mistakes and reinforce learning.
-
Assess Performance â Evaluate learnersâ understanding through quizzes, assignments, or discussions.
-
Enhance Retention and Transfer â Review and summarize key points, and encourage learners to apply the knowledge in new situations.
Instruction
-
Read each of the above and paper (linked above) the nine events slowly and think of one classroom or online example that fits each step.
-
Highlight or underline the keywords (e.g., attention, feedback, assessment).
-
After reading, summarize the nine steps in your own words in one short paragraph.
-
Discuss with a friend or classmate how these steps can be applied in your own subject area.
