Robert Gagné proposed nine steps that guide effective teaching and learning. Each step helps move learners from gaining interest to applying knowledge in real-life situations.
-
Gain Attention – Begin the lesson with something that attracts learners’ interest, such as a question, short video, or real-life example.
-
Inform Learners of Objectives – Clearly tell students what they will learn and what outcomes are expected.
-
Stimulate Recall of Prior Knowledge – Help students connect new information to what they already know.
-
Present the Content – Deliver new material in an organized and engaging way using visuals, demonstrations, or examples.
-
Provide Learning Guidance – Offer explanations, tips, and examples to support understanding.
-
Elicit Performance (Practice) – Allow learners to apply what they have learned through activities or exercises.
-
Provide Feedback – Give immediate and constructive comments to correct mistakes and reinforce learning.
-
Assess Performance – Evaluate learners’ understanding through quizzes, assignments, or discussions.
-
Enhance Retention and Transfer – Review and summarize key points, and encourage learners to apply the knowledge in new situations.
Instruction
-
Read each of the above and paper (linked above) the nine events slowly and think of one classroom or online example that fits each step.
-
Highlight or underline the keywords (e.g., attention, feedback, assessment).
-
After reading, summarize the nine steps in your own words in one short paragraph.
-
Discuss with a friend or classmate how these steps can be applied in your own subject area.
